Torc Waterfall - Killarney National Park

Torc Waterfall is a place to escape from everyday life. It is one of most enchanting natural wonders of Ireland. This stunning waterfall is in the heart of Killarney National Park. It is a must-see place for nature lovers. Torc Waterfall’s height of 20 meters (about 66 feet) and it is surrounded by lush greenery. The Waterfall is fed by the Owengarriff River and the river flows down from nearby Torc Mountain.

I adore Torc Waterfall. The way the water rushes down the rocks is magical. It creates a soothing symphony of natural sounds. Every time I visit there, I feel peace and a connection with nature and I believe you will feel the same.

A little History

The Torc Waterfall has a charming history. The name “Torc” comes from the Irish word for boar. According to legend, the waterfall was home to a magical boar. The story says the boar was a cursed prince, roaming the woods until slain by the hero Fionn MacCumhaill.

In the 19th century, it became popular place for taking the Grand Tour of Ireland.

One notable visitor was Queen Victoria. She visited Killarney in 1861. Her visit brought much attention to the area and of course she admired Torc Waterfall a lot. The Queen’s visit attracts more tourists to Torc Waterfall.

Getting There

Location

As I mentioned Torc Waterfall is in the heart of Killarney National Park, County Kerry, Ireland. It sits at the base of Torc Mountain. Here is the google map.

Directions

To go to Torc Waterfall is not complex. If you start from Killarney, then you have to head south on the N71 road (Muckross Road) towards Kenmare. It is a short drive (nearly 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) and takes around 10 minutes). Along the way you will pass several landmarks, including Muckross House and Gardens. This is a great place to stop if you have extra time.

As you near the waterfall, you will see signs directing you to the parking area. The car park is just off the N71. From there, it’s a short, well-marked walk to the waterfall.

If you use public transportation, then catch a bus from Killarney to Muckross House and walk the rest of the way.

Solving The Parking Problem

Torc Waterfall visit can be a horrible experience, because parking can sometimes be a challenge, especially during peak tourist seasons. Here are some practical tips for you to solve this problem.

The car park at Torc Waterfall can fill up quickly, particularly during the summer months and on weekends. Aim to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to secure a spot and avoid the busiest times.

If you’re visiting with friends or family, try to carpool. Fewer cars mean a better chance of finding parking and reducing the overall traffic congestion in the area.

If the main car park at Torc Waterfall is full, check for alternative parking spots in nearby areas such as Muckross House and Gardens. From there, it’s a short walk.

Ensure you park in designated areas and respect local residents’ properties. Illegal parking can lead to fines and disrupt to enjoy the beauty of the area.

Best Time to Visit

Torc Waterfall is a year-round attraction. So, you can go for it any time you want. Last time I went there at Spring. But in autumn or after heavy rain (when the waterfall is fullest) it brings beautiful colors to the forest around the waterfall.

Spring and summer are also a great time to visit. The trails are usually more accessible and you can go for hiking.

However, for a quieter visit, try to come early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Especially during the peak tourist season in summer.

Hiking to the Waterfall

The hike to Torc Waterfall is a wonderful experience. It is suitable for all hikers, from casual walkers to more serious trekkers. The main trail to the waterfall is well-maintained and clearly marked.

For those seeking more adventure, there are longer trails. One popular route is the Torc Mountain Walk. This trail goes to the waterfall and continues up Torc Mountain. It offers stunning views of the landscape.

The main trail to Torc Waterfall is easy and suitable for all ages. The walk from the car park to the waterfall is about 200 meters (0.1 miles). It takes around 5 to 10 minutes. The path is mostly flat with a few gentle inclines and it is accessible for families with children.

But Torc Mountain Walk is moderate to challenging. This trail is about 7.5 kilometers (4.7 miles) round trip. It can take around 2 to 3 hours to complete. The trail has a steady climb with some steep sections and rocky terrain. Sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are very recommended.

As you hike to Torc Waterfall you will see the path winds through dense woodlands with ancient oak and evergreen trees. If you are lucky, you will see red deer (one of the park’s iconic species) and various bird species.

On clear days, the views from higher elevations are breathtaking and perfect for photos. But be cautious.

  • Rain is always a possibility in Ireland. Waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes are essential.

Personal Favorites at Torc Waterfall

One of my favorite spots at Torc Waterfall is the viewing platform. It’s a short climb from the base of the waterfall. From there, you get a fantastic view of the water as it tumbles down the rocks. It’s the perfect place to enjoy and take stunning photos. I love this place.

For me another thing is the picnic. I went there with my friends. We found a cozy spot along the trail and laid out a blanket and enjoyed snacks while listening to the sounds of the waterfall. It was simply one of the best moments of my life.

There are so many places you can go, when visiting Torc Waterfall. Here are they-

  • Muckross House and Gardens: Just a short drive from Torc Waterfall there is Muckross House. It is a magnificent 19th-century Victorian mansion and it is set against the stunning backdrop of Muckross Lake. The meticulously maintained gardens are perfect for leisure time.
  • Muckross Abbey: This 15th-century Franciscan friary is steeped in history and surrounded by ancient yew trees. I you will have a great time there.
  • Killarney Lakes: The three lakes of Killarney (Lough Leane, Muckross Lake, and Upper Lake) are beautiful. You can go you any of them. They are beautiful.
  • Ladies View: It named after Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting. This scenic viewpoint offers panoramic views of the lakes and mountains. It’s an ideal spot for capturing some stunning photographs like I did.
  • Ross Castle: The castle sits on the edge of Lough Leane. It is from 15th-century and it is a short drive from the waterfall. You can take a guided tour of the castle or enjoy a boat trip on the lake.
  • Innisfallen Island: This island on Lough Leane features the ruins of Innisfallen Abbey. It was founded in the 7th century. You can get there by boat.
  • The Lake Room at Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa: This restaurant will serve you a mix of Irish and international cuisine with stunning views of the lakes. You can have a relaxing meal after a day of adventure.
  • Muckross Garden Restaurant: This awesome café offers a variety of sandwiches, soups and pastries. It’s a lovely spot for a light lunch or taking afternoon tea.
