To get to Ballinastoe Woods it’s best to drive. From Dublin it is easier. Here is how you can get there.
By Car:
The most convenient way to reach Ballinastoe Woods is by car. If you’re coming from Dublin, take the N11 southbound towards Wicklow. After about 25 kilometers, you have to take the exit for Kilmacanogue and follow the R755 towards Roundwood. As you approach Roundwood, you’ll see signs for the Sally Gap. Follow these signs, and after approximately 6 kilometers, you’ll reach a clearly marked turnoff for Ballinastoe Woods. Continue on this road until you reach your chosen parking area.
By Public Transport:
While public transport options are limited, it’s possible to get close to Ballinastoe Woods using a combination of train and bus services. From Dublin, first you have to take the train to Bray or Greystones and then you have you catch a bus towards Roundwood. However, please note that bus services may not run frequently, so it’s advisable to check the schedule in advance.
Alternatively, you might consider taking a taxi from Bray or Greystones to Ballinastoe Woods if you feel fancy. I believe it would provide you more flexibility in terms of timing. Here is the google map of Ballinastoe Woods.
Parking At Ballinastoe Woods
Choosing the right parking spot can set the tone for your day. Here are my personal recommendations,
Ballinastoe Car Park
My top preference for parking is The Ballinastoe Car Park. Though it’s free, the spaces are limited. It’s very close to the trailheads, so you can start your adventure almost immediately. This main car park often has information boards and maps to help you navigate the trails. Regular patrols make this a secure option for leaving your vehicle. Here is the google map of Lough Tay Car Park for pin.
Small Lay-by
Small lay-by is another excellent choice located right next to Ballinastoe Woods on the Wicklow Way. It is very near to Ballinastoe Car Park (less than a minute). This spot is often overlooked because it is very limited (holds only 2 cars). If you’re planning a shorter walk then it can be a perfect place for you. I was lucky enough to park here during my visit.
Wicklow Way Car Park at Luggala (Paid)
If you don’t mind paying a small fee, the Wicklow Way Car Park at Luggala is a great option. This car park is a bit further away but offers excellent amenities. It’s a bit of a walk to reach boardwalk around 20-30 minutes. It opens from 9 am to 7.30 pm. As a paid car park, it often has better facilities like toilets and refreshments. The fee includes security, ensuring your vehicle is well-protected.
J B Malone Car Park
It is named after the famous Irish hillwalker and it is another solid option. It’s also further from Ballinastoe Woods but still can be good if other options are full.
Ballinastoe Mountain Bike Trail Car Park
Lastly, the Ballinastoe Mountain Bike Trail Car Park is a versatile option. It is another side of the woods. If you are planning for hiking or mountain biking. This car park is spacious and rarely full, even on busy weekends. I have to mention it doesn’t have the access to boardwalk.
Tips for Parking
- Try to arrive early. Especially on weekends or holidays, to ensure you get a spot in your preferred area.
- Some of the more secluded spots can be muddy after rain. So always check the ground conditions before parking.
- Always have an alternative parking spot in mind in case your first choice is full.
The Entrance Points of Ballinastoe Woods
Your walking experience will enhance significantly by navigating the entrance points. Here are the main entrance points you should consider,
Halfway Up the Hill
One popular entrance to the Ballinastoe Boardwalk is located halfway up the hill. This entrance offers a moderate starting point and is ideal for those who prefer to ease into their walk. The easiest way to access the Ballinastoe Boardwalk is to park halfway up Wicklow Way hill. There is a small lay-by where you can park. Use the nearby mid-way entrance to enter the wood. This entrance is suitable for short walkers. Especially, families with children or those who are looking for a moderate walk.
The Boardwalk curves up into the woods. This spot looks like a scene from Lord of the Rings. It’s very popular for photos. Cloudy or rainy days give the best soft lighting. After taking photos, explore more magical spots in the woods.
At the Top of the Hill
For those who enjoy a challenge and are ready for a bit of a workout, starting at the top of the hill is an excellent option. The halfway parking area has space for only two cars. It might be full when you get there. But don’t worry! If it’s full, you can park for free at the Ballinastoe Car Park at the top of the hill. And from there, you will have to walk down the main road to reach the same midway entrance. The walk from this car park to the Ballinastoe Boardwalk takes about 10-15 minutes.
Pier Gates, The Don’ts
There used to be a third entrance at Pier Gates that only took 10-15 minutes. However, it is now fenced off, so it’s best to avoid this unauthorized route.
Some people recommend parking at the J B Malone car park and starting from there. In my view, this spot is quite far from the Ballinastoe Boardwalk, and you might get lost. In the below I have attested the Ballinastoe Woods detailed map. You can download it from here.
